The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has issued a final draft guidance document this week regarding the use of dabigatran for the prevention of stroke in atrial fibrillation. NICE is supporting the use of dabigatran for patients that have atrial fibrillation and other risk factors for stroke. This support will undoubtedly be welcomed by both physicians and patients. The final appraisal document from NICE is expected before the end of the year.

This is a general term that describes some of the procedures that we perform. Ablation is the process that modifies small parts of the heart muscle that are responsible for the abnormal heart rhythms or palpitations. Usually this is done by heating the area using radiofrequency at the end of a catheter that is placed in contact with the heart muscle.
